Functional Medicine

Kelley Teixeira, ARNP, Nurse Practitioner, Providing Functional Medicine Services

Functional medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, but also serves to maximize health. Athletes seek Functional Medicine because athletic performance is slipping, has plateued or because they are ready to see what optimized training and performance really feels like.

All athletes, whether a professional, amateur or a weekend warrior, have different needs when trying to optimize physical performance and endurance. Hard training over time can have larger impacts on your body systems commonly resulting in:

  • Overtraining Syndrome
  • Thyroid insufficiency
  • Adrenal burnout
  • Immunodeficiency
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Poor recovery
  • Gastrointestinal distress

All are extremely common in the competitive sports community. Endocrine integrity, liver function, absorption, digestion and inflammation levels all play an enormous role in cardiovascular endurance and the ability to rebuild muscle tissue and continually improve performance.

In order to see what is actually going on inside the body, on a physiological level, lab tests are run on Functional Medicine patients. Lab results allow patient and practitioner to take the most specific and efficient direction when developing therapeutic programs. Functional Medicine programs are individualized, allowing you to reach your greatest performance potential.
